beware ⚠️ and be inspired 💡

Today I had a wonderful reminder that the news is biased.

Of course, that's not news.

There is bias in how people and groups are represented, how data is interpreted and presented, and who is sought out for interviews and quoted.

Another bias that is prevalent, however, is that of highlighting the worst of humanity...the crime, hate, wars, divisiveness, and impulsive, appalling choices made by individuals and organizations that harm, endanger, or kill others.

If you look at the news, you'd easily believe that was the sum total of people in the world. Those harming, and those being harmed.

But that conclusion, while understandable, is wrong.

Today I had the privilege to attend and honor to host a community conversation at WILD Network's 2023 Women in Global Development conference. And it is full of 1200+ people from around the world who are doing incredible work to bring about the best of humanity!

Hundreds of bright, inspiring, and creative problem-solvers who are making a difference in a myriad of ways on equity, inclusion, accessibility, and opportunities for those that have been historically marginalized and underappreciated, who all took time to speak, listen, and engage to support positive changes in the world around them.

Where do you spend time with people who inspire you about what's possible?

Sometimes it's the pain in the world that brings tears to my eyes, but today it was the gratitude of seeing so many gathered in one place who care so deeply and are truly making an impact on a global scale.

If you only focus on the main news outlets, you miss knowing so many amazing people are doing incredible work... All. Around. The. World.

Don't get me wrong. There is value in knowing about and acknowledging the suffering and injustice.  It fuels and directs important actions.

There is also danger in letting this disproportionately impact your view of the world and the people around you.

So, when you're taking in the news, beware of how it impacts you and that the biases it shows don't become your own.  Be aware of how it affects your perception of what's possible.

Brilliant people are doing amazing things. And if you're reading this, it's likely you are too.

You matter.  You do make a difference.  And, I'm so thankful you're here.
