Are you ready for some good news today?
Are you ready for some good news today?
In the past couple months you have heard from me multiple times about the debate that has embroiled my small corner of the world, just as it has in so many others - in the form of a diversity, inclusion, and belonging resolution proposed by the local school board.
Monday night, after 5+ hours of comments, discussion, and additional revisions, the school board passed the resolution!
That was one win.
There were others.
In contrast to last month's speakers and audience, which were vehemently opposed, this time there was a considerable supportive presence. People spoke passionately about their experiences and values and the need for this resolution.
Clear arguments were made about specific revisions to support teachers and the school district - and some significant points were accepted and included in the final draft that was passed.
Students, including one as young as a 6th grader, voiced the importance and value of teaching about diversity and standing against racist and discriminatory behaviors. (So impressive!)
Religious leaders worked together to use their 3 minutes apiece to reclaim and put in context the inspiring and convicting words of Dr. Martin Luther King that had been so blatantly distorted and misconstrued in the previous meeting.
The support was powerful and visceral. The whole room felt entirely different.
And, after 5+ hours, after 11 p.m. - a final resolution was passed!
Sometimes it's easy to feel the heaviness of such painful topics and experiences, and particularly of the dismissal of the way people continue to suffer today.
Last night, even in the sadness of the misinformation and misinterpretations about what this resolution actually represents, there was energy, enthusiasm, and hope.
We need to continue to recognize and celebrate each "win" along the way - each step forward - each time the voices speaking up for the marginalized are recognized and heard.
Wherever you are, whatever the local environment, whatever your strengths of speaking up - each voice joining together creates this momentum. Every voice was needed. Every voice mattered.
You matter. You can make a difference. I'm so thankful you're here.
